“I was genuinely sad to hear that he had passed.”Īfter serving as Steinert’s athletics director for another decade when he left coaching, Paul and his wife, Kay, moved south, ending up in Sunset Beach, N.C. “I have nothing but great memories of Coach Tessein absolutely great,” said Shawn Gardiner, a member of the Spartans’ 1988 state championship team who has gone on to become one of Mercer County’s top soccer referees. Steinert soccer was ranked in the state Top 20 every year he coached and was recognized as New Jersey’s top team twice. The Spartans won four state titles (1975 & 1977 in Group IV, 19 in Group III), five Central Jersey trophies, six Colonial Valley Conference crowns and two Mercer County Tournament championships under his direction. During those 15 years, Tessein became recognized as one of New Jersey’s best coaches as his teams compiled a 257-49-28 record. He then moved over to Steinert High, where he became varsity head coach from 1974-88. Tessein was a 1956 Hamilton High West graduate who started out as the boys’ soccer coach at Reynolds Junior High from 1963-73 when Reynolds housed seventh-, eighth- and ninth-grade students. Mercer County sports lost one of its great figures Sunday when it was learned that former Steinert High varsity boys’ soccer head coach Paul Tessein had passed away at the age of 82.
